Coastal Flooding Community Science: Getting Started
We know that sea levels are rising and will continue to rise into the future. What we don’t know is how this will affect individual communities across the Gulf of Maine. In this module, students will learn about sea level rise and make their own observations of coast lines at or around predicted flooding events through the Coastal Flooding: Storms and Sea Level Rise project, which can be accessed through our "RESOURCES" page. This work will be used to improve predictions of coastal flooding events and inform decision making related to resilience actions.
Me and My Waterway Storymap
Discover story map making for all ages in this art and science lesson, "Storymap Making - Me and My Waterway: Coastal Resiliency" lesson, designed for 3rd to 5th graders. This multidisciplinary activity connects art and science, focusing on local waterways and community landmarks. Through a series of creative steps, students will draw, paint, and construct storymaps that illustrate the impact of climate change on their environment and envision future improvements. This lesson aligns with NGSS and NVAS standards, helping students understand weather-related hazards, analyze map data, and explore community-driven solutions for environmental protection. Watch the video to see how young learners can create meaningful art that fosters awareness, communication skills, and resilience in their communities. The goal is to empower young learners to value their visions for the future, and present those visions to others. Supported by NSF EPSCoR, this project empowers students to visualize and contribute to a sustainable future.
Water filtration
This project created an educational activity that is low cost, hands-on, and includes a finished product. Students may design, build, and test their own water filter system using recycled water bottles, household items (cotton balls, cups, coffee filters), sand, and pebbles.
Teacher guides and student worksheets in English, Spanish and Portuguese can be found here: https://www.3crs.org/water-filtration-activities
Diatoms and Water Quality
This project is designed to educate local RhodeIsland communities about Coastal Resilience. This lesson plan is regarding diatoms, algae present in major bodies of water as indicators of water health. Students will use techniques from art and science disciplines to further understanding of diatoms and their significance.
